Redhead Musings/Ginger Love

“There is much more to being a redhead than the color of one’s hair-G. Adam Stanislav

The realization that I had a different color hair occurred around the age of 4.  As I recall, I was walking with my Granny Pie (yup) across a railroad track in Belmont, Long Island, New York, when the train conductor at the station, yelled to me “Hi, Red!”  Wait…what?  It was my initial Red-awareness moment…the first of many throughout my life.

As I grew up, it didn’t hurt that my Dad and 2 sisters shared this unique characteristic, kind of made it more special to be part of that little club, which was actually 50% of our family.

I have been pretty lucky with the comments about being a redhead compared to some. Sure there was the occasional, “better to be dead than red in the head” remark, and Southpark, and all those villains in the Disney movies, (don’t even bring up Ronald McDonald & Wendy’s), but mostly I’ve been really happy with my hair color.

I cannot count how many hairdressers, friends, strangers have asked me if it is natural! Red-awareness moment–would I dye it this color?

Redheads are definitely a minority, only 2-5% in the world, depending on whose study you believe, which makes us pretty unique. Trivia alert: Scotland has the most, followed by Ireland. And rest assured that the rumors of our eventual demise as a hair color are being debunked.

But I have to say, that my turning point in loving and accepting my redheadedness, was when Charlie Brown fell in love with the little redheaded girl…..even though there was much unrequited love, I was filled with pride.

And now all the new heroines, Ariel, Merida from Brave, Anna from Frozen are turning the tide.

Look out next generation…red hair seems to be a recessive gene and as such can skip a cycle and appear again….so Yay! Even though I have four children, none of whom inherited this color, it could spontaneously reappear in incoming grandchildren. You’re welcome!

Just remember, future grandkids, that you will be in good company. Here is a list of some of my favorite redheads: Do you have more?

The best part of being a redhead is that if you don’t mess with it, as in color, perm, bleach, highlight it…it looks pretty great and shiny as you age. It just kind of fades vs. grays,

Old soldiers never die; they just fade away.

And so have ensued years of loving, not loving, then really loving, my hair color.

So here’s to red hair, and the hope that it soon reappears in my next generation…and as my husband would surely say???….
