Bunnies, Bugs & Birds/Gardening Adventures

If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.

I am not a gardener, not by any stretch of the imagination, but I do love to see things grow (maybe that’s why we had 4 kids). So when the children were little, I decided to plant a vegetable garden in the back yard. My vision was that we would toss the seeds, run our hands through the soil, frolic in the abundance of our bounty, share our veggies with all the neighbors, and one of us would become a famous horticulturalist….hmmm….

Things were going pretty well that first year until we ran into the 3 B’s...bunnies, bugs, and birds.

Just when we started to see those little green shoots sprout, in came all three to try to defeat us…first the bunnies tried to eat everything, next the bugs…(who knew there were so many in this world?)…and then there were the birds, darn they’re fast! Didn’t realize we were creating an “all-you-can-eat buffet” for our local creatures.

We made trips to the nursery to buy natural stuff to spray on everything…homemade pepper spray (not good for lettuce unless you like a kick), cinnamon for ants, marigolds (apparently stinky to animals). We tried everything…fences, netting, trenches.  I figured that by the time we were done, each radish cost $5!  It was enough to turn us into snapdragons. But we were learning, right? Although it was fun, we just never seemed to keep up with the weeding and work.

Fast forward to today….as I longed? for that experience again. The kids are on their own now, but I still want to garden. It’s just a little harder digging and weeding these days #older.

Enter the concept of elevated bed gardening, and particularly, Gronomics.com. I was so excited by this idea. The website told me “It comes in a boxed kit with easy to follow Tool-FREE instructions. These planters set up in five minutes.”

While the first part was true, I’m afraid my five minutes stretched into 5 x 25!  I learned that you need someone besides a “man’s best friend” to help. It’s a 2 person job for sure.

Here's how it arrived..

My experience was actually great. I was determined to get that sucker put together and up and running-and as you can see from the photos, I did it!  I would recommend this to anyone with a small space, an apartment, a bad back, kids, bunnybugbird-haters, human snapdragons, anyone who just doesn’t want to get down and dirty!

I love coming out each morning to check the growth of my mini vegetables…no bunnies so far, but I have spotted some bugs…time to mix up more pepper spray and get ready to fight.

Tah Dah! Finished!

Looks pretty good!
